Project Management Tools

Project Management Templates

The Project Management Office (PMO) manages many tools and templates to assist with the management of the Project Management Life Cycle and Mason's Project Framework. The tools are intended to support the management of projects and enable project management that effectively scales to the size and complexity of the project. These tools include:

EPMO

Enterprise Project Management Online (EPMO) is the technical infrastructure that provides an online tool for all ITS project management and tracking needs. It houses a scheduling interface with Microsoft Project, team lists, project details, templates, and document repository, and a collaborative workspace for project teams and an automated workflow processes.

The toolset includes:

  • Automated project workflow through the five project phases
  • Project management requirements for multiple sizes or types of projects
  • Project Templates
  • A project scheduling tool that leverages Microsoft Project
  • SharePoint collaboration space to coordinate project activities with the entire team

The EPMO is open to George Mason University employees on the Mason network; however, creating and managing projects is reserved for ITS employees only, and requires access be granted by the Project Management Office (PMO). Other Mason, non-ITS personnel can participate with projects as team members. Complete the EPMO Account Request form to request an account on the system.

MS Office Applications

Project management does not always involve the most complex tools available and for many projects, productivity tools such as Microsoft (MS) Excel or Word can provide the basis for capturing and tracking project information. Use of these "tools" along with the EPMO for version control and workflow approvals can go a long way to ensure the project is managed effectively. Mason has an enterprise license for the MS Office suite. Please contact the ITS Support Center at support@gmu.edu if you require MS Office software.

Project Management Templates

The PMO has developed Project Management (MS) Templates to be used in capturing project related information. Templates help jumpstart project work by providing the details and instructions on what types of information needs to be captured to assist with decision making. These templates encompass the entire Project Life Cycle.
